This month two of London's most prestigious auction houses will be holding their Oriental rug and carpet sales. On the 30th March 2022 Sothebys Auction House will be hosting their Arts of the Islamic World & India sale, that includes Fine Rugs and Carpets. This sale has 16 rug and carpet lots, some of the stand out pieces are Lot 166 a Khotan dragon rug East Turkestan circa 1800, estimated £10,000-£15,000, and Lot 165 a Chinese silk carpet, west China, 19th century estimated £8,000-£12,000. Christies Auction House London will be holding their Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds sale which includes 72 oriental rugs and carpets lots on 31st March 2022. This sale includes some very important rugs and carpets from the Safavid dynasty, and one in particular which may be one of the most important oriental rugs to be sold at auction for many years. A beautiful Persian Safavid silk and metal thread Polonaise rug, probably woven in Isfahan in the early 17th century size 1.97m x 1.41m, formerly owned by Baron Adolphe Carl von Rothschild and later passed to a prominent German noble family, where it remained since, the estimate is a spectacular £1,000,000-£1.500,000.
